Books change lives
Which book changed your life?

Mr Clarke (Executive Head)
'Tuesdays with Morrie' by Mitch Ablom

It makes you think about what is important in life.

Mrs C Brown (PE)
'Pillars of the Earth' by Ken Follett

Could not put this book down once I got into it!  Loved the historical setting'

Mrs Howard-Rigby (English)
'Great Expectations' by Charles Dickens

This was the first novel I had to teach to an exam class when I first qualified.  When they left they commented on how I had brought the book to life and I realised my passion for literature could be passed on so I could influence the lives of many young people.

Mrs Gildea (MFL)
'Les Adventure de la Libert
é' by Bernard-Henri Lévy

I read this book cover to cover more quickly than I had ever read a book before.  It is a wonderful book that weaves together the history, literature and philosophy of the Twentieth Century.  It opened my eyes to the relationships between history and the arts.  It takes you on a journey through the Russian Revolution, the Third Reich, the Spanish Civil War and the Algerian Conflict.  I felt that after I had read it I had a more adult and mature view of the world.  I recommend it to all students of literature, history or philosophy.

PS. In English it is called 'Adventures on the Freedom Road.'

Mr Mcleod (Religious Education)
'In the silence of the heart: meditations by Mother Teresa of Calcutta and her co-workers'

I read this book of meditations by Mother Teresa (now Blessed Teresa of Kolcata) in the summer of 1984 when I was working at a soup kitchen run by her Missionaries of Charity religious order in Liverpool.  The thoughts and prayers contained in this little book had a profound effect on me then as they still do today in her identification of God with the hungry, the sick and the homeless.  Every page provokes the reader into reassessing how we see Christ because Mother Teresa's message was in the end so simple: when you turn your back on the poor, you turn your back on Christ.

In 1984 I was 21 and very idealistic.  Now, sadly, I have to be more realistic and certainly there is not just myself to think about as there was way back then, but I still like to think that the words in that small book have contributed in large part to making me the person I am today.

Sr Margaret
'The Singer' by Calvin Miller

This book was the first one I read where Jesus is portrayed as someone else - the Singer and the Gospel is his song.  it helped me to see at aged 18 that God and life are not to be kept in two separate compartments; that God is integral to our whole lives.

Mr Raynor (DT)
A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens

After reading this for the first time I realised that in this life we'll get a chance to put the things right that we got "wrong" and that "good" will eventually overcome "evil",  Doing nothing isn't an option.

"All it takes for evil to flourish is for good men to do nothing"  Scrooge eventually did something.  I will too.

I've lost count now of the number of times I've read this book.  It's funny, it's thought provoking, it's sad, it's reflective, it's educational. it's brilliant!
